Asymptomatic gonococcal urethritis in a male transsexual female.

چکیده
In a previous paper (Fiumara and Di Mattia, 1973) a male transsexual patient was described with symptomatic gonococcal urethritis. Since then, after an interval offour years, a second patient has been found, who is asymptomatically infected. The incidence of surgical sex reassignment of the male transsexual in the United States is not available, but the operation is being performed at many university hospitals and it is expected that physicians will occasionally see such patients. In an attempt to understand more of the pathogenesis of gonorrhoea in these patients, the following case reports may be of interest.

متن کاملThe molecular mechanisms used by Neisseria gonorrhoeae to initiate infection differ between men and women.
The molecular mechanisms used by the gonococcus to initiate infection exhibit gender specificity. The clinical presentations of disease are also strikingly different upon comparison of gonococcal urethritis to gonococcal cervicitis. An intimate association occurs between the gonococcus and the urethral epithelium and is mediated by the asialoglycoprotein receptor. Gonococcal interaction with th...
متن کاملAsymptomatic meningococcal urethritis. Possible protective value against gonococcal infection by bacteriocin production.
Neisseria species other than N. gonorrhoeae have been reported to cause symptomatic urethritis in the male. Carpenter and Charles (1942) described seven such cases due to the meningococcus in which there were no signs or symptoms of meningococcaemia. Although several authors have described asymptomatic urethral carriers of N. gonorrhoeae (Bittiner and Horne, 1955; Landman and Gelmi, 1959; Paris...
متن کاملChlamydial infection of the male urethra.
Urethral specimens from 477 men were collected with endourethral swabs and examined for Chlamydia trachomatis by cell culture on McCoy cells pretreated with idoxuridine. Of these men, 141 had gonococcal urethritis, 262 non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU), and 74 showed no evidence of urethritis. Of 118 men with heterosexually acquired gonococcal urethritis, thirty (25 per cent.), and of 23 men with...
متن کاملAn association between non-gonococcal urethritis and bacterial vaginosis and the implications for patients and their sexual partners.
OBJECTIVES The aetiology of non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) in a considerable proportion of men remains unaccounted for. We wished to investigate the possible aetiological role of bacterial vaginosis (BV), the commonest cause of abnormal discharge in women, in this condition. METHODS We carried out two studies. In the first, case-control, study, we recruited men with and without NGU and exami...
